Why am I not losing weight at all?
If you work out 3 times a week, do cardio exercises, eat healthy, drink plenty of water before your meals, and so much more, but you are still not losing any weight, that may mean one of the following:
You have a medical condition.
Some medical conditions like hypothyroidism(thyroid problem), Cushing’s syndrome or polycystic ovarian syndrome, may be the reason you can’t lose weight.
Hypothyroidism-underactive thyroid gland condition slows down people’s metabolism, because thyroid gland is responnsible for bidy temperature, perspiration and metabolism. Oprah Winfrey said in 2009, that she was not able to lose weight for a long time, because of this condition.
Cushing’s syndrome happens when the adrenal glands, that are located on top kidneys, produce too much cortisol. Cushing’s syndrome leads to a fat buildup in the abdomen, back and face.
Many women suffer from hormonal imbalance, which may result in polycystic ovarian syndrome. It leads to weight gain and difficulty getting pregnant.
If you think you may have any of these medical issues, please, speak to your doctor as soon as possible.
You don’t sleep enough.
It may sound funny, but I personally loose weight when I have a very good night sleep, every night for a week. After a week with a proper rest, I notice that my body is in better shape and looks better overall.
Moreover, if you work out a lot, trying to lose extra weight, you must understand that, recovery and rest are more important than the workout itself. Because the actual fat burning process happens exactly during your resting period. You have to give your body enough sleep and rest to burn that fat.
Furthermore, good sleep is crucial for your mental and physical well-being. One of the largest factors of obesity is a lack of sleep. Insufficient sleep may lead to a serious medical condition- sleep apnea, which makes people, in fact, gain weight.
You are stressed out.
You may be thinking why you’re not losing weight at all, and the answer can be – stress.
When you are working hard to lose weight, you may feel under a pressure. Exercising alone causes stress to your body, making it produce excess cortisol.
If you have a stressful professional or personal life, it make your body produce more cortisol. Too much cortisol may lead to Cushing’s syndrome, that we discussed above in this article.
Therefore, you have to take care of your mental and emotional health. Your goal is overall total-body wellness.
Furthermore, many people are stress eaters and when they are stressed they cannot control their appetite and eat more to comfort their feelings.
You drink sugar.
“I only get healthy drinks”, says a friend of mine, grabbing a bottle of famous Gatorade from a supermarket shelf.
Many people, who are seeking weight loss, try to refuse soda, like Coca Cola, Pepsi, etc. And transfer to “healthier” Vitamin Water, a fancy Pure Coconut Water, you name it.. The fact is that they all contain that sugar that we do not see. An average bottle of regular Vitamin water contains 32 grams of sugar.
Maybe you did not know but Sport drinks categorized as sugary drinks. A standard bottle of sports drink contains 32 grams of added sugar, or 8 teaspoons of sugar.
What about fruit juices? And we’re not even talking about bottled juices. Fresh juices must be considered in moderation, if you are trying to lose weight. They are very healthy, and may boost your immune system, they taste great, but they also contain large amount of sugar.
Usually, it takes a lot of fruit to make one single glass of fresh juice, so you get much more sugar in that glass of juice that you would get by eating a whole fruit. If you are trying to lose weight, it is better to eat whole fruits.
Also, pay attention to the sugar content if your drink flavored coffee or iced tea regularly. Most of the iced coffee and iced tea usually sweetened with sugar or syrup. A large size cup of flavored iced coffee may contain up to 20 teaspoons of sugar.
You consume too much alcohol.
Alcohol has high level of calories. Especially beer, cider, wine or sugary alcoholic cocktails. Heavy drinking may lead to weight gain.
The fact is that when you consume alcohol, it breaks down into acetate in your body(strong acid). And your body burns it first, before it burns any other calories that you consumed or stored. If you drink too much, your body spends most of the energy fighting with acetate, instead of burning excess fat and sugar. Alcohol also takes your body’s energy that can be used to fight diseases and bacteria, but it’s whole another topic.
In short, drink in moderation, or stop drinking alcohol at all, if you are serious about your weight loss.
You consume BBQ Sauce and Ketchup often.
Ketchup and different sauces may contain a lot of sugar, that we don’t need when we want to lose weight.
For instance, one table spoon of ketchup contains 1 teaspoon of sugar. Some sauces have even more added sugar. Check the labels and try to choose the sauces with the least amount of added sugar.
Final Note. Why am I not losing weight at all?
Weight loss is not an easy process, it takes time to see the first results and many factors, like medical condition or lack of sleep or stress, can make it even harder.
However, the main formula of the weight loss is the same: calorie intake must be less than calorie expenditure. In addition, do not stress out, give your body breaks from time to time, let it rest and heal, control the sugar intake and it will happen.
And it may not always be shown on your scales or measuring tape, but your body is changing from within, if you continuously working on it.
Changing your weight means changing yourself, your lifestyle, and it requires a lot of self-discipline, strength and dedication. And You can do it!
