How to Distinguish Fatigue from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Constant weakness of body, muscle aches and apathy may bot be the result of your blockage at work but the result of chronic fatigue syndrome or CFS. Doctors consider this disease as common one, but it is difficult to identify the existence of it and to treat. Let’s learn what should we know about CFS.

What is chronic fatigue syndrome?

Many people wake up tired and tortured, even if they have slept for 9 -10 hours. They complain about pain and pain in muscles and joints, it is not clear where it is difficult for them to concentrate and to think clearly. First, people suppose that it is stress at work or at home. They go on vacation, but rest helps for a while. Then, they visit doctors, they prescribe a lot of research and find nothing. It seems that all indicators are normal. Often doctors claim that patients are healthy and all these problems are contrived, are “only in their minds”.

Facts about CFS.

According to facts stated by the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one million US residents suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome, and up to 80 percent of cases remain undetected. The National Health Service of Great Britain estimates the number of patients with CFS in the country at 250 thousand people. There is no data on the prevalence of the disease in Asian regions.

According to statistics, women from 25 to 40 years old are most susceptible to chronic fatigue syndrome.

How to recognize chronic fatigue syndrome?

Doctors identify the “big” and “small” signs of chronic fatigue syndrome.

Big sign is the presence of unexplained chronic fatigue (not mental or physical stress), leading to a significant reduction in previously achieved levels of activity and disability. However, it is important to track  these symptoms for six months or more.

Small signs include headache, pain in muscles, joints, chest, painful neck or axillary lymph nodes, sore throat. There are also signs of inflammation of the mucous membrane of the throat, recurrent dizziness, anxiety, insecurity, general decrease in performance, apathy, emotional depression, daytime sleepiness and insomnia at night, memory loss, low-grade fever, prolonged discomfort after physical or psychological stress.

Doctors can diagnose CFS in the event that there are two “big” signs and a sufficient number (at least 75%) of “small” ones. It is important to know that “squeezed orange” syndrome usually connected with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia.

The main characteristic of a chronic disease is a widespread and symmetric musculoskeletal pain. Fibromyalgia can cause health problems such as depression and poor sleep. According to statistics, 9 out of 10 patients with this diagnosis are women. How to understand that the patient does not invent a diagnosis?

Facing the CFS, someone obediently goes to heal the disease and look for the roots of his or her illness in “childhood traumas”. However, American researchers held studies, analyzed about 10,000 samples of the CFS and published it in 2015 . They concluded that CFS affects most diverse systems of the body.

The problem is that there is no single standard examination method and there is no any universal treatment method. These diseases are the consequences of a whole set of failures in the body. In order to achieve effective treatment, the diagnosis must reveal exact mechanisms of body regulation that are violated in this particular patient. After that, doctors can heal them.

Why it happens? There are several assumptions:
Mitochondrial dysfunction.

Every cell in the human body has tiny components – organelles, called mitochondria. Sometimes they are called cell generators, because their task is to generate energy. Mitochondria can be poisoned by toxins, for example, pesticides, affected by chronic bacterial, viral and fungal infections or due to nutritional deficiencies and hormones. Brain sections such as the hypothalamus and pituitary gland may be particularly sensitive to any such malfunction. As a result, chronic fatigue may become one of the symptoms of decreased hypothalamic and pituitary function.

Hormonal disruptions.

Deficit of thyroid hormones and adrenal glands, in particular, cortisol, is the most common cause of CFS. Chronic stress leads to depletion of the adrenal glands – this is adrenal insufficiency, in which the body is no longer able to produce enough cortisol (a stress hormone). Reduced cortisol levels are a sign of chronic fatigue syndrome.

Infectious diseases.

Infections can cause or contribute to the onset of chronic fatigue syndrome and / or fibromyalgia. For example, Epstein-Barr virus, herpes virus or bacterial infections can become provocative.

Other reasons.

An immune system with chronic infection can cause a special type of disorder called “coagulation”. Instead of dissolving blood clots, it forms deposits on the inner wall of blood vessels. These deposits impede the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body, which also contributes to the development of chronic fatigue syndrome. Neurotoxic compounds such as heavy metal salts trapped in the brain can also contribute to the development of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

Is it possible to cure CFS?

Patients with this diagnosis say that it is extremely difficult to select a therapy. Nowadays, there are no special drugs specifically designed to treat this syndrome. Doctors of anti-aging medicine say that the treatment program can include the normalization of rest and exercise, unloading-diet therapy, general or segmental massage with physical therapy, autogenic training or other active methods of psycho-emotional background normalization, psychotherapy. Individually selected drug therapy depends on the results of the examination of a particular patient, daily tranquilizers, enterosorbents, antihistamines in the presence of allergies. It is important to eliminate chronic diseases associated with insufficient oxygen supply to the body.
