The Effect of Hormones on Your Weight

There are a lot of factors which have an impact on your body and hormones are one of them. The hormones in your body impact not only your mood, but also the size of your clothes and much more. Genetics, diets, exercising will not guarantee weight loss. Hormones may be the main hidden factor.

Cortisol

Cortisol, also known as the stress hormone, is the main enemy of athletes. It destroys muscle tissue and leads to accumulation of a body fat.

When you are going through stressful situations your body spends huge amounts of energy and as a result you want to fill it quickly with food. So, high levels of cortisol lead to chronic stress and problems with metabolism.

Advice:
  1. Try to keep stress under control by meditations or let it go with such dynamic techniques as boxing.
  2. You can also include citrus in your diet; vitamin C reduces cortisol level by 30%.
  3. Moreover, you should avoid coffee; caffeine raises cortisol’s level in the blood.

Adrenaline

Adrenaline is a lot like cortisol, however it has a reverse effect on metabolic processes. High level of this hormone suppresses the feeling of hunger, breaks down fats and gives you energy. However, low level of adrenaline can cause problems with metabolism.

Advice:

Give yourself a little shake-up sometimes; you don’t have to jump with a parachute: try windsurfing, swimming with dolphins or snowboarding.

Leptin

Leptin is the hormone that tells your brain that it’s time to eat chocolate or something else. It is responsible for the appetite and feeling of saturation. During the meal, it gives a signal that the body is saturated.

When the level of leptin decreases, your appetite increases dramatically. Sleep also affects the amount of hormone in your body – thus, people sleeping less than seven hours per night are more prone to obesity.

Advice:

To maintain normal level of leptin you should consume more products rich in omega-3 acids.

Estrogen

Estrogen affects the menstrual cycle and the distribution of body fat. That is why women on menopause gain weight sometimes. Moreover, due to lack of estrogen you start eating more sweets. (your body is trying to recover estrogen level by eating sugar ) Plus, your body starts storing more fat in your waist.

Advice:

It is better to consult your doctor if you face problem with hormonal imbalance. However, you should also keep an eye on what you eat on daily basis. Limit consumption of alchohol Try not to drink much alcohol, coffee, and add more fiber to you diet.

Insulin

Insulin hormone is responsible for our love to donuts, cookies and sweets. Because insulin provokes synthesis of glucose in your body. Try to keep it in mind.

Advice:

Do not let insulin level jump up. Consume more proteins than carbohydrates and do not skip workouts.

Ghrelin

Ghrelin is also called “hunger hormone”. This hormone can be a trouble if you are on a diet, because it is the main reason of your cravings. Jump of this hormone level can be caused by lack of sleep. As a result you will get a brutal appetite leading to overeating.

Advice:

Forget about soda and other sugary drinks. Eat more fish, buckwheat, dairy products: eat in small portions every 3-4 hours.

Dopamine

Dopamine (also known as the pleasure hormone) is responsible for many of our weaknesses (including overeating). However, overweight is a consequence of a hormone deficiency — a vicious circle. Dopamine helps to control weight; you just need to learn how to enjoy the “right” products.

Advice:

Green tea, fish, strawberries, bananas and apples will help to control dopamine. These foods are rich in tyrosine, from which dopamine is synthesized.

Thus, the effect of hormones on your weight is very significant. From all above-mentioned points it is clear that you should eat healthy food and sleep well in order to keep your hormones in balance.
